Irate locals entering the cement plant
A number of incensed locals, including relatives of ‘trapped’ workers, barged into the plant on Friday by breaking open its main gate, following a fatal mishap that occurred last night at Dalmia cement factory in Rajgangpur locality of Sundargarh district.
This has triggered tension in and around the plant.
According to sources, the factory authorities had previously closed the main gate following the mishap and no one was being allowed to enter the plant. Several locals had congregated outside the gate to learn about the developments.
Three workers identified as Sushant Rout, Dasarath Patra, and Ranjit Bhola were trapped under debris in the coal hopper collapse and have not been rescued yet. As they were not located even after 18 hours since the accident, families of the missing workers had gathered at the plant, urging rapid response.
The mishap took place during the stocking of coal in the hopper, which subsequently collapsed. These structures typically hold several tonnes of coal before the organic materials are conveyed to boilers via belts. Rescue operations were initiated, with six fire brigade teams and heavy cranes involved in the search drive.
However, at least 64 other workers have been rescued so far and the operation is on.
Dalmia Cement authorities have stated that the management of the coal hopper is handled by a third-party vendor. A company spokesperson said, “The injured are receiving swift and adequate medical care, and all necessary emergency services have been mobilised.”
The affected area remains sealed off while investigations are underway.
