The cyclonic storm Michaung over Southwest Bay of Bengal, which moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 8 kmph during past six hours, was centered about 230 km east-northeast of Puducherry, 190 km east-southeast of Chennai, 310 km southeast of Nellore, 410 km south-southeast of Bapatla and 430 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

It is likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach Westcentral Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by December 4 forenoon.

Thereafter, it is likely to move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross between Nellore and Machilipatnam during forenoon of December 5 as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.

Cyclone Michaung Impact on Odisha

Under its impact, some Southern and coastal districts of Odisha are likely to receive heavy rainfall between December 4 and 6.

Speaking about the preparedness, Gajapati District Collector Smrutiranjan Pradhan said, “We have received information about the impending cyclone and the expected heavy rain. We are prepared for that. I have reviewed the preparedness with all the Tehsildars, BDOs and IICs yesterday.”

“We are awaring farmers through mics to store their crops at safe places. All the Community Health Centres (CHCs) are ready to meet any eventualities with the capacity of 64 patients in each CHC,” Pradhan added.

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam.

Day 2 (Valid from 8:30am of 5.12.2023 to 8:30am of 6.12.2023)

Orange Warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam.

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Puri.

Day 3 (Valid from 8:30am of 6.12.2023 to 8:30am of 7.12.2023)

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Nayagarh, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri and Rayagada.
