In a shocking incident, a doctor at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack allegedly tried to send a patient at the trauma department to a private nursing home in the city.

As per reports, a patient arrived at the State’s premier health institute with a severed hand. But instead of treating him at the hospital, the doctor at the trauma department allegedly asked the attendants of the patient to take him to a private nursing home for ‘better treatment’.

the attendants and a social worker confronted the doctor about the unfair and corrupt practice, the patient was finally admitted to the plastic surgery department of the hospital and operated upon.

“Forget about the surgery, the prescribed medicines and injections were also not given to my patients. They wanted him (patient) to become serious and get admission to his (doctor’s) nursing home,” said the complainant.

“The doctor gave me an estimate of Rs 40,000-50,000 for the surgery at the nursing home. Even another employee of the hospital administration tried to persuade me to admit my patient to the nursing home,” he alleged.

A social worker Suresh Mohanty said, “SCB hospital has corruption written all over it. The doctor, who is in the charge of casualty department, allegedly diverted many patients to his nursing home in the past. How can this hospital become world-class if such kind of corrupt practice continues here?”

Asked about the allegations, Medical Superintendent Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra said, “I have enquired about the matter. The patient was treated here. And he is healthy after the surgery.”

Mishra further said, “As far as the allegations of medical negligence are concerned, an inquiry will also be conducted in this regard.”
