Creation of Greater Rourkela Metropolitan Area demand gains fresh momentum

Local organisations have intensified their efforts to develop the Brahmani Riverfront and establish a Greater Rourkela Metropolitan Area. Representatives from Rourkela Bikas Manch (RBM) and Sachetan Nagarik Manch (SNM) recently met with RN Pali, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Durga Charan Tanti, urging state intervention.

Environmental and Economic Aspirations

Suman Dutta, president of RBM, emphasised the potential of the Brahmani Riverfront project to enhance tourism, support sustainable environmental practices, boost economic growth, and reduce pollution in the Brahmani River. The river's banks, from Vedvyas to Panposh, currently suffer from rubbish accumulation.

Advocacy for Regional Integration

The Greater Rourkela Metropolitan Area initiative seeks to include adjacent areas with the steel city to promote regional development. This proposal aims to improve infrastructure, create economic opportunities, and raise living standards across the region. MLA Tanti confirmed submission of these proposals to the authorities and pledged to maintain momentum by following up with the government.

Infrastructure Developments

Tanti also reported appealing to India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to conduct surveys for a proposed outer ring road. This road is poised to connect Kalunga, Kansbahal, Rajgangpur, Birmitrapur, Nuagaon, Jareikela, Chandiposh, Lathikata, and neighbouring areas, fortifying connections for the impending Greater Rourkela.

Previous Plans and Future Projects

About five years ago, Rourkela Smart City Ltd (RSCL) presented an ambitious proposal for the Brahmani river's eastern bank near Panposh, estimated to cost Rs 35 crore. Yet, the project stalled amid allegations of encroachment and technical issues. Nevertheless, there's ongoing exploration by Rourkela authorities for development near Vedvyas and Panposh.

In June 2023, Subhankar Mohapatra, then CEO of RSCL, announced plans to advance the riverfront project near the Vedvyas temple under the Water Bodies Rejuvenation initiative, with similar considerations underway for a site at Panposh.
