The construction work has begun for a state-of-the-art railway wheelset manufacturing facility at Haldiapada in Odisha’s Khordha district.

Spread over 86 acres, the plant is being developed by Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory (JTRF), a subsidiary of Jupiter Wagons Limited, with an investment exceeding Rs 2,000 crore.

It is expected to be commissioned by 2027.

Once operational, the plant will manufacture 1 lakh wheelsets, 2 lakh forged discs, and 1 lakh axles annually.

After fulfilling the needs of Indian Railways, 50% of its production is expected to be exported to markets in Europe and North America.

The upcoming plant will be a fully automated, environmentally conscious unit featuring rooftop solar panels, use of LNG and CNG as clean fuels, and a closed-loop water recycling system—making it a zero-discharge facility.

It is also designed with Industry 4.0 technologies to ensure smart and efficient manufacturing.

JTRF’s Chief Technology Officer, Sudip Haldar, highlighted the strategic importance of the project, noting that it will not only reduce India’s dependence on imports for railway components but also generate approximately 3,600 direct and indirect jobs.

The project reportedly supports India's vision to expand railway freight handling capacity from 1,500 million tonnes to over 3,000 million tonnes by 2030.
