The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police on Monday got a dedicated security division for ensuring foolproof security of vital installations and VIPs. As per senior officials, the security division will be headed by a Commandant Rank officer.

“The main objective is to enhance the monitoring and effectiveness of security of vital installations and VIP security and also upgrade the capacity of Commissionerate Police in handling security related issues,” said Commissionerate Police in a release.

Senior Commissionerate Police officials said that the security division will have several units including, VIP security, static and vital installation security, emergency response unit, and technical & logistics unit. Twin City Police Commissioner, Saumendra Priyadarshi said,

“The Security Division was approved by the Odisha government and it has started functioning from today. Be it VIP security, VIP residence or vital installation or emergency response, it is the responsibility of Commissionerate Police.”

Earlier, there was a special security battalion under Commissionerate Police and its jawans were providing security. But the arrangement was a DCP-centric arrangement.

“Our proposal was for having a dedicated security division for the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar which was approved by the Odisha government. The security division will supervise VIP and vital installation security and emergency response system in wake of a terror attack or any disaster,” said Priyadarshi.

Priyadarshi said that the security division will also monitor the use of sophisticated equipment like baggage x-ray, deep search metal detectors and vapour tracer.
