Temperatures in parts of Odisha slipped to as low as 6 degrees Celsius under the impact of a prevailing cold wave. Additionally, major cities also recorded intense cold with the mercury plummeting below 12 degrees.
On the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, Jharsuguda recorded the lowest minimum temperature, shivering at 6 degrees Celsius followed by Rourkela (6.4), Keonjhar (8.8), Hirakud (11.2), and Sambalpur (11.6).
As per the data shared by weather scientist, Umasankar Das of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the drop in temperature continued and appeared to intensify at places like Jharsugusa.
While the city had recorded 13.4 degrees Celsius at 5:30 am on the morning of January 7, it reeled at 8 degrees at the same time today, recording a sharp drop of 5.4 degrees under the impact of the cold wave.

The twin cities of Odisha, however, witnessed a slight rise in temperature. Last night, Bhubaneswar recorded a minimum temperature of 15.1 degrees and Cuttack noted 15 degrees Celsius. Incidentally, on January 4, the state capital shivered at 12.7 degrees and the Silver City at 12.4 degrees, marking the lowest temperatures this season.
However, coastal areas like Puri witnessed a minimum of 16.6 and Gopalpur recorded 15.4 degrees Celsius yesterday. Notably, temperatures have been higher than normal in these regions while it has been lower than usual in interior parts of Odisha.

Meanwhile, the weather department has predicted a gradual rise in temperature by 2-4 degrees Celsius over the course of the next three days across all districts of the state.
