Class VIII students in Ganjam schools struggle to read English, Collector calls for remedial steps

A recent surprise visit by District Collector V. Keerthi Vasan to schools under Patrapur block in Ganjam has brought to light worrying gaps in students’ learning levels, particularly in English.

The Collector inspected Subarnapur Primary and Upper Primary School, where he interacted with students from different classes. While children were able to read passages from their Odia textbooks without difficulty, the situation turned concerning when he asked Class VIII students to read from their English textbooks.

According to sources, several students struggled and a few were unable to read at all, highlighting the lack of basic reading skills in the subject despite reaching higher grades.

The Collector expressed displeasure over the situation and advised teachers to strengthen classroom practices. He stressed that language skills, especially in English, are crucial for students to cope with higher studies and wider career opportunities.

He further instructed school authorities to pay special attention to reading ability and to adopt remedial teaching where necessary.

The visit also underlined broader concerns over learning levels in government schools, especially in rural areas.

Officials accompanying the Collector assured that corrective measures would be initiated, including regular monitoring and teacher guidance, to ensure that students gain adequate proficiency in both Odia and English.
