In a shocking incident, a Class 10 boy student of a private school in Khordha town was found hanging from a tree on the school premises on Friday.

The deceased belonged to Gajapati district and was studying in the school as a hostel boarder.

Asked about the incident, school Principal BS Rail said, “He was from Gajapati’s Gumma block. Unfortunately, he committed suicide by hanging himself. As far as the mobile phone is concerned, as per the school’s policy, students are allowed to use mobile phones only on Sundays.”

“The body of the student has been recovered. A spot enquiry is currently going on in the presence of police and the scientific team. The family of the deceased has been informed and they are on their way to the school,” said Khordha Tehsildar, Bibhas Panigrahi.

While the exact reason behind his death is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that the student hanged himself after the Principal of the school took away his phone from him as it is not allowed inside the hostel.

Sources said, the school, which is a day boarding-cum-residential institution, has many hostels and hundreds of boarders in them. The police are trying to ascertain whether the deceased was scolded while seizing the mobile phone from his possession or warned of any action against him, forcing him to end his life, if at all he has committed suicide.

It is worthwhile to mention here that no media personnel were allowed inside the school campus to report the incident after the student’s body was found. Later, while they were allowed to go inside the school campus, the reporters were restricted from speaking with any students.
