Chaos at Bhubaneswar wedding reception after girl claimed groom betrayed her; police detain youth

A festive wedding reception turned into an unexpected scene of chaos and confrontation on Sunday night under the Dhauli police limits, when a young woman dramatically arrived at the venue, claiming that the groom—then celebrating his marriage on stage—was in fact her former lover, who had betrayed her trust and broken a promise of marriage.

The incident unfolded at a popular marriage mandap in Bhubaneswar, where a large number of guests had gathered to celebrate the newly-wed couple’s union. The atmosphere was filled with music, dance, and ceremonial rituals, until the sudden arrival of the woman, escorted by local police. 

She immediately confronted the groom in full public view, accusing him of abandoning a long-standing romantic relationship and secretly marrying another woman.

According to sources, the woman alleged that she and the groom had been in a serious relationship for several years. She claimed that the man had promised to marry her, and that there had even been a private exchange of vows between the two—possibly witnessed or acknowledged within their circle. However, without any formal closure or notice, the man reportedly severed all contact with her and went on to marry someone else.

The confrontation created a major commotion at the venue, drawing shocked reactions from the guests, the bride’s family, and onlookers. The situation soon escalated, prompting the intervention of police officers already present at the site. The groom was forcibly removed from the reception stage and taken into custody for questioning.

Police sources confirm that formal complaints have been filed at both the Lingaraj Police Station and the Mahila Police Station. The charges include alleged emotional betrayal, breach of promise, and sexual exploitation under the pretext of marriage. 

Preliminary investigation suggests that the woman had attempted to reach out to the man several times before the wedding, but received no response, leading her to seek police intervention.

Authorities have launched a full investigation to ascertain the veracity of the woman’s claims. They are currently verifying phone records, personal communication, and any possible witnesses who can shed light on the nature and duration of the relationship.

Legal experts say that if the woman's allegations are proven, the case could fall under serious charges.
