Celebrations commence as Bhubaneswar marks 77th anniversary as Odisha's Capital

Celebrations have commenced as Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, commemorates its 77th foundation day. The Temple City celebrates its Foundation Day today, marking a significant milestone since its designation as the capital on 13th April 1948.

This significant day in history was graced by India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, as he officially inaugurated the city to its new role.

Reflecting on 77 Years of Progress

Through the decades, Bhubaneswar has transformed dramatically, blossoming into a centre of culture, commerce, and education. As today's festivities unfold, both government and private organisations have orchestrated a variety of events to honour Bhubaneswar's journey.

Official ceremonies are underway at the foundation stone site in front of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. In addition, a special session is set to be held at Utkal Mandap come evening, attracting citizens and dignitaries alike.

Commemorative Events Across the City

To honour this occasion, a series of events have been organised both by government agencies and private entities. The day commenced with a ceremonial wreath being placed at the historical foundation plaque located near the Odisha Legislative Assembly. Additionally, an evening session is scheduled at the Utkal Mandap, renowned for its cultural significance.

The events are set to feature Governor Dr. Haribabu Kambhampati, alongside several ministers and government officials. The city's streets and notable landmarks, including the Legislative Assembly, the Lok Seva Bhavan, and the Commissionerate Police Building, are illuminated with vibrant lights, creating a festive atmosphere.

Bhubaneswar has experienced considerable growth since becoming the capital, reflecting its blend of rich history and modern development. This celebration not only honours the past but also looks ahead to the future progress of the region.

“I extend greetings on the special occasion of Bhubaneswar’s 77th Foundation Day. We are trying to make the Foundation Day a special occasion. All the government departments and Bhubaneswar residents are eagerly waiting for the day. There will be celebrations in all the 67 wards in Bhubaneswar. We want public participation in taking our Capital City forward,” stated Sulochana Das, Bhubaneswar Mayor.
