A woman devotee from Ganjam died and her husband was critically injured after a car hit them near Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar on Sunday evening. The deceased has been identified as Sulochan Mohanty, hailing from Digapahandi in Ganjam district.

As per reports, Sulochana and her husband Jurinath Bebarta had come to Lingaraj temple to offer Paya Shraddha. 
Jurinath Bebarta, who has sustained a head injury said,” I was standing while my wife was sitting there. All of a sudden, the car moved fast and knocked us down. Then I did not know what happened to us.  What kind of safety measures are in place here?" 

Police said the driver accidentally put the car in reverse at a parking lot and hit the couple. The driver has been arrested.

Addressing a press meet in Bhubaneswar, ACP (zone-2) Girija Chakraborty said, "The couple was walking by the parking lot on the north gate of the temple last evening. A car was parked there. The car was purchased yesterday. The driver, its owner, and his son were inside the car." 

“The driver had intended to move the car forward, but he accidentally put the vehicle in reverse gear. At that time, the couple was passing by. The car hit the couple. The woman died instantly while her husband was critically injured,” the ACP added.

He also said that the driver was arrested while the car owner was called to the police station for interrogation. The driver will be produced in the court, he said.
