The number of caesarean or C-section deliveries in private hospitals is significantly higher than in government hospitals, as revealed in the Odisha Assembly.
Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling presented the data comparing childbirth statistics over the past two years in the state Assembly on Tuesday while replying to a question by MLA Tankadhar Tripathy.

2022-23: Out of 1,29,088 deliveries in private hospitals, 99,998 were cesarean sections, accounting for 77.46%.
2023-24: The number increased to 1,40,126 deliveries, with 1,13,598 cesarean deliveries, raising the rate to 81.06%.
2022-23: Of 6,00,740 deliveries in government hospitals, 1,83,443 were C-sections, making up 30.53%.
2023-24: Out of 5,91,185 total deliveries, 1,95,578 were cesarean, slightly increasing the rate to 33.08%.
The data highlights the increasing preference for cesarean deliveries in private healthcare facilities, sparking discussions on maternal healthcare practices in the state.
