Bridge collapse leaves three panchayats cut off for 3 days in Kandhamal

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Incessant rains in Kandhamal district have washed away a makeshift bridge over Gumadi river, cutting off Daringbadi block's panchayats from essential services and education for three days.

Bridge washed away in Kandhamal

Incessant rains have paralysed daily life in Odisha’s Kandhamal district, depriving several villages from essential services. The collapse of a makeshift diversion bridge over the Gumadi river near Baliguda has cut off connectivity for three consecutive days, severely impacting residents of Daringbadi block.

Vital Link Washed Away in Gumadi River

The temporary bridge, a crucial lifeline for thousands in the region, was washed away under the force of swollen river waters following persistent downpours. As a result, the panchayats of Tilori, Budaguda, and Gumikia remain cut off, leaving villagers stranded and struggling for access to markets, medical facilities, and schools.

Students and Teachers Are the Worst Hit

Frustration among residents is flairing up over the lack of alternative routes and administrative apathy. “We are facing major problems. Vehicular movement has come to a halt. It’s not just us; students and teachers are finding it extremely difficult to commute,” said a local villager.

Another added, “The real issue is school children. Teachers can’t reach the schools, and education is being severely affected. Crops can wait, but the future of our children cannot.”

The makeshift bridge was not just a road; it was the only link enabling hundreds of children from these panchayats to attend school in Daringbadi. Its loss has disrupted education and daily life.

Authorities Yet to Take Action

Despite mounting distress, no official word has come on when repairs will begin. Locals have urged the administration to prioritise setting up a temporary structure or a ferry service to restore connectivity before the situation worsens.

A Call for Swift Intervention

As heavy rains continue to lash Kandhamal, the plight of these stranded villages highlights the urgent need for robust infrastructure and timely emergency response. With monsoon season far from over, proactive measures could prevent a full-blown crisis in these isolated panchayats.
