The Odisha government had launched a massive crackdown to free regional transport offices (RTOs) from the clutches of the middlemen. However, it seems, the practice of illegal gratification is still prevalent at the RTOs.

In the latest instance, a customer alleged that a staffer of the State Transport Authority (STA) demanded Rs 2000 from him for issuing a new driving licence (DL).

Taking a sarcastic jibe at the illegal practice, Baibhav Mishra wrote on Twitter, “My dream job is to be a RTO officer. Went to get a new DL because my old one is kind of damaged. Dude directly asked for 2000 bucks. @STAOdisha you guys should get yourself listed in the stock market. Would be bumper profit.”

“Yes. One of the most lucrative jobs and the way they behave, it seems your life is in their hands. BTW, now a days such tasks are online. Who asked you money? Any agent or official staff?,” wrote a Twitterati in reply.

Narrating his experience, a Twitter user wrote, “I had applied for an address change, it's stuck at photo capture. No intimation of what next. Over 1 year. Now I understand what needs to be done. I will visit and pay the bribe.”

However, responding to the complaint of the customer, the STA wrote, “Hi! This was not the kind of experience we ever wanted you to have, we regret the same. One can apply for duplicate license on Sarathi portal & visit the RTO concerned for document verification after booking slot. Kindly let us know the details via DM to probe the matter.”
