Breach At Canal Embankment
A 20 feet breach in the embankment of Nuagaon Distributary Canal at Suninda under Puri’s Balanga Water Resources Division has inundated farmlands spanning over 30 acres.
The breach occurred on Thursday night.
As per reports, the villagers of Gadachandanpur are marooned after the water from the canal entered their village.
Following the breach, the villagers are panicked because it is gradually widening with every passing hour. They said more farmlands will be inundated if the breach is not sealed soon enough.
Locals alleged that this is not the first time a breach is created here. In fact, there was a breach at the same place earlier too, but due to poor repair work, another breach was created at the same place.
The irrigation department has been informed and they are reportedly preparing to repair the embankment with sand packs for immediate relief.
“The canal was formed over a sandy bed. Unfortunately, it was breached last night. We have already stopped the water flow at head rich to control the inundation of farmland. Restoration work has already begun and it will be completed by this evening,” assured Executive Engineer, Baikunthanath Dalai.
