Bodies of Odisha train tragedy victims won’t be cremated until they are identified: AIIMS Bhubaneswar 

The bodies of the Bahanaga triple train tragedy victims that are preserved at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar won’t be cremated until their identities are ascertained. Executive director, of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Prof Ashutosh Biswas clarified this on Monday. 

Ten days have passed since the deadly mishap at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore that claimed 288 lives and injured over 1,000 passengers. 

However, the identification of the bodies preserved at AIIMS Bhubaneswar is still going on, informed AIIMS authorities today. 

AIIMS Bhubaneswar executive director, Prof Ashutosh Biswas informed that AIIMS now has a total of 81 bodies. 

"While 75 bodies have claimants, the rest six are yet to be identified. However, their identification process is underway. These bodies won’t be cremated until they are identified. We have preserved them. As of now, we are waiting for the people to come and receive the last remains of their loved ones,” said Biswas. 

“We had a coordination meeting over the confusion regarding the disposal of bodies. So, no decision has been taken to dispose of the bodies. The bodies will be preserved. Moreover, we are waiting for the DNA reports. Meanwhile, we are checking the bodies to track their condition. They are in the same condition as they were received,” informed Prof Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy, additional superintendent, AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
