The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday launched a 12-hour bandh in Kalahandi district over several issues related to farmers.

The saffron party demanded relief from ‘katni chatni’ by millers during paddy procurement as well as distress sale of cotton, lowering of electricity tariff, and removal of country liquor manufacturing units in the district.

“This bandh is against the corrupt government of Naveen Patnaik. ‘Katni chatni’ of paddy by millers is a regular affair in Kalahandi and the district witnesses at least Rs 11 crore of corruption every year,” said a protester picketing at Naktiguda.

“Kalahandi district has illegal country liquor manufacturing units running almost everywhere. This is a nexus between the Naveen Patnaik government and liquor mafia. The BJD is collecting election funds through these mafias,” he alleged.

The bandh began at 6am today and will continue till 6pm.

The effect of bandh was seen in major towns of Kalahandi including Bhawanipatna where the shops remained shut. The BJP members were seen picketing at several places in the district. They have called to shut down all the offices and educational institutes too.

However, emergency services like medical and fire services have been excluded from the bandh.

Notably, the BJP had earlier gheraoed all the block and RI offices demanding the same. But no steps were allegedly taken by the government to address their demands. Therefore, they launched the bandh today.
