The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday slammed the Biju Janata Dal (BJD)-led Odisha government by terming the ‘Mo Ghara’ scheme as a mere extension of the Central scheme introduced to mislead the people of Odisha.

Speaking about the scheme, BJP leader, Bibhuprasad Tarai said, “Mo Ghara is introduced to mislead the people of Odisha. It is a well-known fact that the Odisha government hijacks central schemes and repackages & introduces them with their own branding. BJD has introduced it after failing to distribute homes under PM Awas Yojana.”

“Moreover, as the election is nearing, it is a ploy devised by the BJD to influence voters of the State,” Tarai added.

The Congress also was in no mood to spare the State government over the scheme.

“A new slogan has been coined by the BJD as ‘Mo Ghara’. If they (BJD) could not provide pucca houses to people in their 22 years of rule in Odisha, then how will they provide it now?” said the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) chief, Sarat Patnaik.

Targeting the BJD-led Odisha government, Patnaik further said, “Odisha government’s each and every move is politically motivated and directed towards the election. They launch these schemes only to counter similar schemes from the Centre. They had earlier launched a Biju KBK scheme against the Congress-led Central government’s KBK scheme too. But that vanished into oblivion just months after its launch.”

The ‘Mo Ghara’ scheme was approved by the Cabinet in a meeting on Monday.

As per a government press release, the scheme will cover all such families who were left out of the existing housing schemes due to stringent eligibility criteria or due to insufficient allocation and also those who had received housing assistance of smaller amounts in the past and now want to upgrade or expand their houses.

Following the cabinet decision, Odisha Panchayati Raj Minister, Pradeep Amat said, "The scheme has been launched to benefit the low income group and middle classes residing in the rural areas by providing them loans with subsidy."
