Former BJD MP Prasanna Acharya on Friday sustained critical injuries after his car met with an accident with an oxygen-laden tanker near Beladihi in Sambalpur's Rairakhol on late Thursday night. 

The former MP was initially admitted into an ICU of a private hospital in Sambalpur, where his condition was stated to be critical. 

Acharya's car reportedly suffered a head-on collision with a gas tanker on NH 55, Sambalpur-Rairakhol road, late last night.

As per reports, the PSO of the former Rajya Sabha MP is also critical while the driver of the car sustained minor injuries in the mishap.

"It was a two-way road. We were travelling at around 70-80kmph when a truck hit our car near Luhapank. Prasanna Acharya sustained serious injuries, I fractured my hip. Our driver also sustained some injures in the accident. Thankfully all the locals helped us to get to the hospital," said the Acharya's PSO Raghav Pradhan.

Doctor Sirshak Ghose, Superintendent of the hospital where Acharya was admitted, said, "The patient is stable now. He has suffered a road traffic accident last night. He is being treated by neurosurgeon, general surgeon and orthopaedic doctors."

Asked about the airlift, Northern Range RDC Shrikant Prusty said, "It depands on the doctors' advise. we have spoken to his family members and doctors too. Because his family members are staying in Bhubaneswar they are insisiting on shifting him to a hospital in Bhubaneswar. We will airlift nhim to Bhubaneswar soon." 

Acharya was reportedly returning to Bargarh from a meeting at Naveen Niwas in Bhubaneswar when the mishap took place. Meanwhile, police have detained the driver of the truck for questioning.

Later,  Acharya was airlifted and brought to Bhubaneswar from a private hospital in Sambalpur. He is now undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the Capital city.
