BJD Leader Debashish Samantaray
In a move that has stirred political circles once again, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Member of Parliament Debashish Samantaray has launched a fresh wave of criticism against leaders within his own party.
Taking to social media, Samantaray voiced his concern over the growing influence of newcomers in the party who, according to him, neither understand the legacy of BJD nor uphold the ideals of Biju Patnaik and Naveen Patnaik.
In his post, Samantaray wrote, “Many who have recently joined the Biju Janata Dal and have quickly secured positions of power seem unaware of the party’s history and the values it stands for. They are not familiar with the sacrifices of thousands of dedicated workers and senior leaders who, since the formation of the party, struggled relentlessly to transform a regional outfit into a party of national significance.”
The senior BJD MP further remarked that some of the current leaders and influencers in the party appear to be guided by external interests. “They are disconnected from Naveen Babu’s vision, his commitment to secularism, and his dedication to Odisha. They are neither loyal to the party, nor to the state, nor to the Chief Minister,” he alleged.
Without naming the individuals, Samantaray hinted at a growing culture of opportunism, calling such figures “self-serving and lacking in self-respect.” He expressed concerns that this trend could weaken the foundational principles on which the BJD was built.
Commenting on the party’s defeat in the last election, Samantaray attributed it not just to political missteps, but to a deeper disconnect with “Odia Asmita” (Odia identity and pride). He concluded by asserting that safeguarding Odisha’s identity should remain the core mission of the party.
Such remarks have triggered widespread discussion within the political circles, particularly because this is not the first time that Samantaray openly criticized members of his own party.
While BJD leadership is yet to issue an official response, insiders suggest the comments might create internal rifts in the party.
