Naveen Patnaik has once again been elected as the president of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for an unprecedented ninth term. Despite the victory, a shadow of unease looms over the party due to an unusual delay in announcing the state executive body.

This has led to growing unrest within party circles, as both senior and junior members voice concerns about the management and future direction of the party.

What led to political speculations?

Traditionally, the executive body is announced immediately after the BJD’s presidential election. However, this time the delay has ignited speculations and intense discussions. Speculations are rife about whether the list has been withheld due to fears of rebellion or if the postponement is a strategic opacity aimed at placating dissatisfied voices within the BJD.

Leadership across 15 organisational districts remains uncertain, with indications that some members are showing signs of discontent. Although BJD officials have promised a timely resolution, the lack of announcements has been unsettling for many party members.

The delay also affects the formation of a trust board, meant to oversee BJD’s properties and operations, as per the party’s constitution. This has further contributed to dissatisfaction among the party’s cadre.

Political analysts are keeping a close watch as Patnaik navigates these internal challenges. The upcoming decisions regarding party appointments are critical, as they might either strengthen his leadership or lead to potential fissures within the party.

“Only after the formation of a full-fledged committee,  it can be ascertained as to whom we have dropped. Internal bickering is obvious in a party as everyone cannot be satisfied. Whatever differences are there within the party will be resolved by state-level leaders,” BJD MLA, Pradeep Kumar Dishari said in a presser.
