Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium Complex in Rourkela on Friday. He also inaugurated three Hockey training centres in Birsa, Lahunipara and Manchmara.

CM said these projects will help in nurturing a large spectrum of sports talent from Sundargarh and nearby regions.

During the inauguration, Patnaik said, “Apart from hockey, Sundargarh has produced players of repute in athletics and many other disciplines. Birsa Munda Athletic Stadium complex features an athletic stadium with 400m synthetic track and a natural turf football field which can seat more than 9000 spectators."

The Hockey training centres in Bisra, Lahunipara and Manchmara have Category-3 FIH certified synthetic hockey turf with changing rooms for players, gym and a seating capacity of 200. Each facility is spread over 3 acres with a project cost of over Rs 11 cr per centre.

The newly-built Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela hosted the 2022 Hockey World Cup. The stadium was built in 15 months and has a seating capacity of 20,011.

As per reports, the Odisha government spent Rs 1100 crore for hosting the grand event this year, 16 times more than Rs 67 crore, which was spent in 2018, when Odisha hosted its first-ever Hockey World Cup.
