Bird flu scare slashes chicken sales in Bhubaneswar, fish demand soars
The detection of bird flu cases in Khordha district has cast a shadow over the poultry markets in Bhubaneswar, leading to a sharp decline in chicken sales across the city. Fear among consumers has resulted in deserted chicken shops, even in traditionally busy meat markets and non-veg zones.
Despite a noticeable drop in chicken prices, there has been little to no footfall at poultry stalls. Vendors across Bhubaneswar report a significant dip in daily sales, with many customers opting to stay away due to health concerns.
While chicken was priced at Rs 240 per kg a week ago, now it has dropped to Rs 170-180 per kg in Bhubaneswar, sources added.
Restaurants and roadside eateries that serve non-vegetarian meals have also reported a decline in chicken consumption.
“As many are not consuming chicken due to bird flu, the sale of fish has increased. Hilsa is being prepared mostly by the customers,” said a fish trader at Unit-4 market in Bhubaneswar.
“I bought prawn today. The price of the prawn used to be Rs 500 per kg, but now it is being sold at Rs 700 per kg,” said a customer.
The bird flu scare has not only impacted sales but also triggered apprehension among poultry farmers and wholesalers, who fear large-scale losses if the panic continues.
Authorities have urged the public not to panic and assured that necessary precautions are being taken. Health officials are monitoring the situation closely.
