Bhubaneswar metro to have 20 stations in first phase: Urban Development Minister

Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announced the 26 km Bhubaneswar metro project with 20 stations from Airport to Trisulia. Completion target is 2027.

Bhubaneswar metro rail project will cover a length of 26 km and there will be a total of 20 stations in the first phase, informed Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra in Odisha Assembly in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

According to Minister Mahapatra, the first phase of metro rail project in the Capital City will cover the distance from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia Square. As many as 20 stations will be set up at prominent places like Bhubaneswar Airport, Capital Hospital, Bapuji Nagar, Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Ram Mandir, Vani Vihar, Acharya Vihar, Jayadev Vihar, Xavier, Rail Sadan, District Centre, Damana, Patia, KIIT, Nandan Vihar, Raghunathpur, Nandankanan, Baranga, Phulapokhari and Trisulia squares.

While a grant of Rs 210 crore was sanctioned for the project in 2023-24, a grant of Rs 1,000 crore has been approved in 2024-25. A target has been set to complete the project by 2027.

The ambitious development project aims to transform urban transport in Bhubaneswar, tackling traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity across key areas of the city.

As per sources, the metro trains will run on railway tracks 13 metres above the ground level. However, the height of the railway tracks will be higher at Rajmahal, Jayadev Vihar and Baranga.

Metro trains will reportedly run in the Capital City every 10 minutes. For this purpose, it has been planned to buy as many as 13 metro trains with three coaches each.
