Bhubaneswar’s metro rail project has entered a crucial phase with the commencement of precast construction at its dedicated facility.
According to reports by The Times of India, the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has launched operations at its precasting workshop and coach maintenance depot, aiming to speed up infrastructure development for the 26-km-long elevated corridor.
The move comes amid the state government's recent decision regarding the formation of a high-level committee to oversee metro planning and execution.
Bhubaneswar Metro Work: What is Precasting?
The precasting facility is manufacturing pillars and columns, a move that significantly cuts down on-site construction time and ensures better quality control.
The metro route, which connects Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar to Trisulia in Cuttack, will have 20 stations. The project is expected to be completed by December 2027, aligning with the government's set deadlines.

Metro’s Infrastructure and Future Plans
The first phase of the metro project, costing Rs 6,255.94 crore, will serve key commercial, educational, and healthcare hubs in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Alongside, a 40-acre metro maintenance depot and a command and control centre (CCC) are under construction at Ratagada Lenkasahi in Baranga, with a budget of approximately Rs 300 crore.
BMRCL has awarded contracts for various metro stretches, ensuring work progresses without financial constraints. Structural construction for elevated tracks is set to commence in April, with soil testing already completed at several locations. The metro will also feature a fleet of 13 three-coach trains, with provisions for expansion based on demand.

Enhanced Connectivity and Urban Impact
Once operational, the metro is expected to reduce congestion along major city corridors. Travel time from Trisulia to the airport will be approximately 45 minutes while commutes between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack will be cut to around 30 minutes.
The Bhubaneswar metro's strategic development is part of Odisha’s broader infrastructure push, including new roads and flyovers.
