Bhubaneswar KIIT University girl student’s death sparks massive protests in Nepal bringing global shame

A couple of days after a girl student from Nepal, a third year B.Tech student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), in Bhubaneswar died, allegedly by suicide, members of the students wing of the Nepali Congress party staged a protest in Kathmandu on Tuesday, demanding justice for the victim.

The deceased, identified as Prakriti Lamsal, died allegedly by suicide, after being harassed by a third-year Mechanical engineering student of the same university. The accused, Advik Srivastava, was arrested by the Commissionerate Police from Bhubaneswar airport on Monday evening.

Commenting on the protest in Nepal, a KIIT student, under the condition of anonymity, said, “Entire Odisha is ashamed of the incident. The way the hostel wardens commented on Nepal’s budget is very derogatory and condemnable.”

Meanwhile, palpable tension continues outside the university campus as students staged a silent protest demanding justice for the deceased family.

Moreover, they also demanded a public apology from hostel wardens Jayanti Nath and Manjusa Pandey for their derogatory remarks against the neighbouring country.

Accusing the university authorities of attempting to hide facts, the protesting students demanded an impartial investigation into the case.

Besides, they alleged that the Nepali students returning to the hostel are now reportedly being asked to sign undertaking.

Meanwhile, the sensitive matter rocked Odisha Assembly with both ruling BJP and Opposition expressing concerns over the matter.

While BJP MLA Babu Singh demanded immediate arrest of KIIT founder Achyuta Samanta, Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati called for a judicial probe into the matter.
