Four days after the hit-and-run case that occurred near Rajmahal square in Bhubaneswar on September 29; the police could ascertain the identity of the deceased and handed the body over to the family members on Monday. 

The deceased has been identified as Dinabandhu Baral, a resident of Bharasapur village in Pipili of Puri district. 

According to the police, Dinabandhu was sleeping on the footpath on the fateful night of September 29. Later in the night, a speeding vehicle crushed him under its wheels and sped from the spot. Dinabandhu died on the spot. 

On being informed, a team from Capital Police Station reached the spot, rescued the body, and shifted it to the Capital Hospital for post-mortem. The deceased couldn’t be identified initially. 

Four days after the incident, the police identified the deceased and handed over the body to Dinabandhu’s wife. 

“He would come to Bhubaneswar on a regular basis in search of work. He would often stay back in Bhubaneswar. I came to know about the incident four days after the mishap. People in our locality said they had read about the incident in the newspaper. Initially, I didn’t believe them. However, I came to Bhubaneswar today and identified the body as that of my husband,” said Jayanti Baral, the wife of the deceased. 

Meanwhile, the police have launched a manhunt to nab the driver of the vehicle who has since been on the run.
