The Odisha government laid out an ambitious redevelopment blueprint for the state capital this August, especially in the last ten days.
In a vision for the future of Bhubaneswar, the govt has rolled out plans for a new satellite city, affordable housing schemes, a metro rail project, and strengthened regional air connectivity.
Together, these initiatives aim to reshape Bhubaneswar’s urban landscape and improve mobility, housing, and infrastructure for its growing population.
The centrepiece of the expansion is the proposed Bhubaneswar New City, spread across over 338 hectares on the outskirts of the capital.
Linked to the recently approved Rs 8,307 crore Capital Region Ring Road (CRRR), the township is planned at Malipada, Daspur, and Gothapatna. With a projected housing capacity for two lakh residents, the city will feature solar-powered infrastructure and modern civic amenities.
Meanwhile, the CRRR, a six-lane 110.87-km corridor sanctioned by the Union Cabinet, will decongest traffic in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Khordha while serving as the backbone for the satellite township.
Parallel to the satellite city push, the government has accelerated its affordable housing scheme in Bhubaneswar. Construction work has already begun at select sites, with the first batch of units expected to be handed over soon.
Designed to benefit low and middle-income families, homes will be priced between Rs 15 to 50 lakh and allocated through a lottery system.
The long-awaited Bhubaneswar Metro project also gathered pace this month, with the state government submitting its proposal to the Centre. A technical committee has been tasked with conducting ground surveys, preparing a feasibility study, and recommending routes and cost-sharing models.
The metro will be developed with joint participation from the Union and state governments, with the final alignment and funding structure to be decided after the committee’s report.
In a parallel boost to regional connectivity, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the first direct flight between Bhubaneswar and Jharsuguda under the state’s B-MAAN aviation scheme.
Operated by Star Air, the 76-seater aircraft will cut travel time significantly, linking western Odisha’s industrial hub with the capital and providing an alternative to lengthy road and rail journeys.
From housing and mobility to regional integration, the government’s roadmap is a sweeping effort to accommodate Bhubaneswar’s growth while positioning it as a modern, sustainable capital.
