The Odisha Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for phase 1 of the much-awaited Bhubaneswar-Cuttack metro rail project. Apart from the metro rail project, the state Cabinet also accorded approval to 11 more proposals.

As per official sources, approval has been granted to the DPR for the construction of the Bhubaneswar metro rail project phase I from Bhubaneswar airport to Trisulia Square, Cuttack at a cost of Rs 5929.38 crore, and engagement of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on a nomination basis as turn-key consultant for the execution of the project.

Earlier, the Odisha government had announced that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik would lay the foundation stone for the metro rail project on January 1, 2024.

The metro rail project will have 20 stations in the 26-kilometre stretch. The areas to be covered include Biju Patnaik Airport, Capital Hospital, Sishu Bhawan, Bapuji Nagar, Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Ram Mandir Square, Vani Vihar, Acharya Vihar, Jaydev Vihar, Xavier Square, Rail Sadan, Damana Square, Patia Square, KIIT Square, Nandan Vihar, Raghunathpur, Nandankanan Zoological Park, Phulapokhari and Trishulia Square (Cuttack).
