A woman lost her life after undergoing a tubectomy operation at Routrapur in Bhadrak on Wednesday.

The deceased, Jayanti Bej, the daughter of Hrusikesh Bej had undergone surgery at the government-run family-planning camp held at Barapada in the district on July 25 (Tuesday).

However, Jayanti developed pain and her stomach reportedly swelled soon after the operation. Her family members rushed her to the nearest hospital and she was later shifted to Cuttack after her health condition deteriorated. She passed away in Cuttack under treatment on Wednesday.

Her family members alleged she died after the doctors severed her urinary tract during tubectomy as the surgery was performed in the dark due to a power cut.

“There was a power cut during surgery. The doctor on duty had told to take her to Cuttack if there pain persists. But she returned home after surgery. On the same night, she felt pain in her body. So we first took her to Agarpada hospital, then Bhadrak, and later shifted her to Cuttack where she breathed her last,” said Jayanti’s brother Kshirod Bej.

When contacted, Bhadrak CDMO Santosh Patra said, “We do not know exactly what happened to her. Her body has been sent for post-mortem. We cannot say anything until the report comes.”

Patra refuted allegations of severing the urinary tract during the surgery of the deceased. “The allegations are not true. She had water accumulated in her stomach. So doctors here sent her to Cuttack,” said Patra.

The family members of the deceased woman have lodged a complaint in connection with the incident at Bhadrak Rural Police Station.
