The wild bear, which had allegedly killed a man near Bhatarasiuni village in Nabarangpur district, was allegedly beaten to death by irate villagers on Saturday night.

Moreover, as many as two forest officials were injured while trying to prevent the angry villagers from killing the wild animal.

As per reports, the wild animal attacked and killed a man near Bhatarasiuni village on Saturday evening. Following the tragic incident, local people tried to drive away the wild animal from the area. But the animal went away to the nearby forest and stayed there.

Subsequently, the villagers asked the forest officials to drive away the wild animal from the nearby forest immediately. However, when the forest officials failed to drive away the animal from the area, the irate locals hurled stones at the bear. Later they thrashed it to death with sticks.

When the forest officials tried to prevent the mob from attacking the bear, they also faced the wrath of the people. In the process, two of them were injured. They have been admitted to the local hospital for treatment.

Reacting over the incident, Nabarangpur DFO Subhendu Prasad Behera said that proper action will be taken against the culprits following an investigation into the incident.

“Local Range Officer and OIC have reached the spot and started an inquiry into the incident. The post-mortem of the wild animal’s body has already been done. Proper action will be taken as per the rules and based on the post-mortem report,” said Behera.
