A woman from Bangladesh arrived at Budhhakusumi village under Balasore’s Kamardha police limits claiming a man from the village as her husband.
The woman, as identified from her passport, is Ruma Mariam from Amtali in Bangladesh.
Mariam said she has been looking for her husband for the last six years. According to Mariam, Barendra Bhanja from Buddhakusumi village had married her six years ago as per Muslim rituals.
Later, Barendra allegedly left her and returned to Odisha. She came to Buddhakusumi from Bangladesh in search of him, Mariam alleged. She demanded to be recognised as Barendra's legal wife.
Meanwhile, Barendra's family members said that for the last six years, the woman has never called or tried to contact them. They suspect some ulterior motive behind her sudden appearance and demand for wife status.
As per Barendra’s family, he was working in West Bengal’s Digha five years back. That might be the time when Mariam could have come in contact with their son (Barendra).
Meanwhile, the Balasore district administration has said legal aid will be provided to her if she files a complaint against Barendra. She has maintained silence till now and said nothing to the media.
It is pertinent to mention here that Barendra has gone incommunicado after Mariam arrived at his village and according to the police, his mobile phone is also switched off.
