Some victims out of the total 288 persons killed in the Balasore train mishap might have died due to electrocution, revealed the FIR registered at the Government Railway Police Station (GRPS) by a GRP Sub-Inspector, Papu Kumar Nayak.

As per the FIR, a lot of bodies did not have any injury marks on them, so death might have been caused by the snapped power cables on the railway tracks.

Nayak, in the FIR said, following the accident the overhead high-tension cable broke and fell on the track and on the derailed coaches electrocuting many passengers in the process.

It is pertinent to mention here though the GRP has initiated the investigation after registering an FIR, the CBI took over the investigation on Tuesday.

A 10-member CBI team along with some Central Forensic Science Laboratory members reached the spot at Bahanaga station and visited the main line and loop line to carry out the investigation. Some members of the team also visited the signal room and held discussions with the officials there.

The investigation is currently underway.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the mishap rose to 288. Informing about the development, Chief Secretary of Odisha, Pradeep Jena said, “193 bodies were sent to Bhubaneswar, out of which 94 bodies were handed over in Balasore; while 1 body was handed over in Bhadrak.”
