August Kranti Diwas was observed in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday in remembrance of the clarion call by Mahatma Gandhi which led to the Quit India movement.

The event was held at the Shaheed Memorial at Unit-9 in Bhubaneswar and was attended by Odisha Governor, professor Ganeshi Lal, and other leaders from across the political spectrum.

Speaking to reporters, Odisha Governor, Professor Ganeshi Lal said, “There is no district in Odisha which does not have freedom fighters. From Laxman Naik to Harekrushna Mahatab, their role in the Indian freedom movement will be remembered for ages.”

“The call for Quit India Movement was the last nail in the coffin for the British which forced them to leave India. However, there should not be any politics on Kranti Diwas,” said BJD’s Amar Satapathy.

Congress MLA, Suresh Routray, who was also present at the event, said, “Today is August 9, Kranti Diwas. This was the day when freedom fighters like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Azad, Acharya Kripalani, Harekrushna Mahatab, and Subash Chandra Bose joined the Quit India movement on the call of Mahatma Gandhi. Their sacrifices are second to none.”

On August 9, 1942, India heard a resolute call for freedom from Mahatma Gandhi, as he launched the Quit India Movement during the session of the All-India Congress Committee in Mumbai. The movement came to be known as August Kranti, marking a turning point in India's struggle for independence. It set in motion a wave of unity, nonviolent resistance, and resilience that would eventually lead the nation toward liberation.
