Cases of dog bites are reportedly increasing in Bhubaneswar, causing concerns for the residents as well as the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC). The civic body has admitted the problem and came out with an explanation that the sterlisation drive for street dogs has not been carried out due to legal hassles.

As per reports, the BMC is expecting to carry out the dog sterilization drive soon. As a case in this regard is sub judice in Orissa High Court, the BMC is unable to carry it out. It is said that the High Court order is expected by the end of this month and the sterilization drive will be taken up thereafter.

A kennel with a scientific method has been set up at Mancheswar for 250 dogs while a veterinary hospital is established with good facilities to treat as many as 100 dogs every day. Operation theatres have been arranged there.

As for the issue, BMC Commissioner, Vijay Amruta Kulange said, “We have a problem in carrying out the sterilization drives because the High Court has issued a stay order on the anti-birth control of the dogs. We are expecting a reserve order from the High Court soon.”

“We are ready for the birth control exercise, but we are waiting for the High Court’s decision on the issue,” the BMC Commissioner added.
