dead body
In a tragic and unfortunate incident, a farmer from Kundra village in Titilagarh block of Bolangir district has allegedly ended his life due to mounting debt pressure. The deceased has been identified as Durga Charan Bhoi, who, according to his family, had borrowed money from multiple groups to sustain his farming.
Family members claim that lack of rainfall this season destroyed his paddy and cotton crops, leaving him unable to repay the loans. The mounting financial stress reportedly pushed him into extreme distress.
On the day of the incident, Durga Charan allegedly consumed pesticide. He was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
According to locals, the farmer had been visibly upset in recent weeks over the poor harvest and repeated demands from lenders for repayment.
“He had taken loan from four groups. He also had gone outside to work as migrant labourer for money. He was there in the morning. He had also been to his brother-in-law’s house and returned home. I talked to him. He wanted to have chicken today,” recalled a teary-eyed Parameswar Bhoi, father of the deceased farmer.
So far, there has been no official statement from the district administration or police regarding the incident. The death has sparked outrage in the area, with villagers demanding immediate compensation for the family and urgent measures to address the recurring problem of farmer suicides in the region.
The tragedy once again brings to light the grim reality faced by farmers battling unpredictable weather, crop loss, and crushing debts.
