In a tragic incident, a couple died in front of their two daughters after an ambulance hit their bike on a bridge over river Mahanadi in Boudh district on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Mitu Behera and his wife Manorama. They were residents of Sadeipur area in the district.

Fortunately, both the children, who were near the deceased when the mishap occurred, are reportedly safe.

As per reports, the couple along with their two daughters was on their way from Athamallik to Boudh on a bike. They stopped on the bridge to show Mahanandi water to their daughters. While the children went to the upper part of the bridge, the couple waited for their return while sitting on the bike. Meanwhile, an ambulance, coming from Sambalpur side, hit them from rear. While Mitu died on the spot, Manorama was rushed to Boudh Headquarters Hospital in critical condition. However, she passed away while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The driver of the ambulance is reportedly on the run after hitting the bike.

A pal of gloom has descended in the area following the tragic incident. Family members and relatives of the deceased and several villagers visited the hospital after being informed. Local residents have demanded immediate arrest of the culprit.

Till the last report came in, local police had reached the spot and started an investigation into the incident.
