Koraput farmers stand in long queues for fertiliser

After reports of fertiliser scarcity in Western Odisha, the problem has now spread to the southern region, with Koraput’s Narayanpatna block witnessing large crowds of distressed farmers. Since early Monday morning, farmers have been lining up in front of the Narayanpatna Cooperative Society to secure urea bags, but many alleged that they returned empty-handed despite waiting for hours.

The demand for fertiliser has led to chaotic scenes, with farmers alleging they are forced to spend entire nights in queues to secure even a single bag.

As per reports, some farmers staged a night-long sit-in two days ago demanding supplies. However, the issue remains unresolved. No official response could be obtained from the Narayanpatna Cooperative Society regarding the persistent shortage and poor crowd management.

Corn Cultivation Linked to Rising Demand

According to reports, the sudden surge in the number of corn farmers in the Narayanpatna area has placed additional strain on fertiliser stocks. While farmers insist there is a shortfall, co-operative societies reportedly have adequate supplies to meet demand. The problem, however, lies in the pace of distribution and the sheer volume of farmers arriving to collect fertiliser.

Government Assures Sufficient Supply

Chief Minister Mohan Majhi assured that the State has no shortage of fertiliser. To maintain order, fertiliser distribution is now being carried out under tight security, with each farmer restricted to one bag at a time.
