AIIMS Bhubaneswar gets BHISHM Cubes; AI-powered mobile hospitals for disaster response

In a significant step towards strengthening emergency medical response during disasters, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has received three advanced modular mobile medical units called BHISHM Cubes.

These life-saving units have been provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's Disaster Cell to ensure healthcare reaches even the most inaccessible regions during crises.

Each BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita and Maitri) Cube is a compact, mobile hospital that can be fully deployed within an hour. Designed for rapid response, the cube transforms into a fully equipped medical facility with an Outpatient Department (OPD), Surgical Operation Theatre (OT), and a Medical Laboratory.

Built for versatility, these units can be transported via air, water, or road, making them ideal for use in areas where traditional infrastructure is damaged or unreachable due to floods, landslides, or other calamities. Being waterproof and impact-resistant, BHISHM Cubes can be safely air-dropped or shipped across rivers without any functional damage.

Powered with Artificial Intelligence and cutting-edge medical technology, each cube is capable of providing treatment to up to 200 patients simultaneously.

Retired Vice Air Marshal Dr Tanmay Roy, who headed the BHISHM task force, said, “BHISHM cube is an initiative of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It is driven by the National Security Council. These cubes have been sent to all institutes of national importance. Its basic goal is last-mile connectivity during a disaster. This can be transported even on a bicycle.”
