A day after a carcass of an elephant with its tusks missing was found, a leopard cat has been found dead at Similipal National Park in Mayurbhanj district on Monday. The carcass of the leopard cat was recovered from the forest near Budhi village under the Karanjia forest range.

The exact reason behind the death of the leopard cat has not been ascertained yet. Meanwhile, the forest department officials have started an investigation into the incident.

Veterinarian, Lingaraj Mohanta said, “It is suspected that the leopard cat, which is around two months old, might have died due to dehydration after getting separated from its mother.”

According to Mohanta, the exact reason can be ascertained only after conducting its post mortem.

“We will also send samples to the wildlife centre for tests and if any infection is found, necessary steps will be taken accordingly,” Mohanta added.

The death of leopard cat has certainly come as a concern as decomposed carcass of an elephant with its tusks missing was recovered in the park yesterday. It is suspected that the elephant was killed and its tusks were removed.
