After Bharatpur case, will anyone visit a police station?: Orissa HC raps Odisha Police 

The Orissa High Court, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the Bharatpur case expressed its displeasure over the role of the police. 

As per a report, a division bench comprising High Court Chief Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh and Justice Sabitri Rath heard the PIL. While hearing, Chief Justice Singh said the entire incident seemed to be disturbing. Two visited the police station with no intention of committing any crime but to register a complaint. What happened in the police station has been shrouded in mystery and is under investigation. But, while coming out of the police station, an FIR was lodged against them where they were accused of attempting to murder. 

After coming to know this, will anyone visit a police station? If an IPS officer had visited the police station in place of an Army officer, would the police have treated him similarly?, asked the Chief Justice saying the DGP should clarify.

During the hearing, the High Court asked Advocate General Pitambar Acharya, who was present in the court, to ensure restoration of people’s faith in the system. 

At the same time, the Chief Justice categorically said that the High Court will not interfere in the investigation as the police have the constitutional right to investigate. 

The High Court also said that care should be taken for the case should not be affected by whatever the court had said. 

Similarly, the High Court also directed ADGP (modernization) Dayal Gangwar to submit a status report on the CCTV cameras at all police stations across the state. 

The court also directed the print, electronics and social media not to mention the names of the Army major and his fiancée. 

The next hearing is scheduled for October 8, 2024.
