Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have made a major breakthrough in suspected gold smuggling in Cuttack. They seized over 9 kg of gold near the Tangi toll gate from a car and arrested two persons.

The seized gold is approximately valued at Rs 6.44 crore, informed sources.

As per reports, the DRI sleuths had specific information about the smuggling of foreign-origin gold from Kolkata. The officials intercepted a car at the Bandalo (Manguli) toll plaza in Cuttack on the evening of March 28.

On searching the vehicle, the DRI sleuths recovered 65 pieces of smuggled gold bullion which weighs 9,180 grams. 

The seized gold was valued at Rs.6,44,46,164. The gold biscuits were concealed in a cavity of the vehicle.  

The gold along with the vehicle was seized while two persons were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, sources said.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
