5 including 4 children killed as under construction culvert collapses in Odisha’s Rayagada

In a tragic incident, at least five persons including four children were killed after a portion of an under construction culvert in Uparasaja village under Kalayansingpur block in Rayagada district collapsed on Monday morning.

According to sources, the mishap took place when the children were bating under the culvert.  

The centring work over the culvert was carried out two months ago, but its contraction work has not been finished yet, sources informed.

Though the exact reason behind the mishap is yet to be ascertained, incessant  rain in the area is believed to be the reason behind the collapse of the culvert.

On being informed about the incident, a rescue team, comprising personnel of the fire service and police, rushed to the spot and working to clear the debris. 

Besides, Odisha Law Minister Jagannath Saraka, local MLA and SP visited the spot and took stock of the situation.

“This is a very unfortunate incident. Necessary action will be taken,” Rayagada MLA Makaranda Muduli said.

“The loss of five lives has shattered me. As per the rule, necessary compensation will be provided to the family members of the deceased,” Saraka said.
