5 dead, 9 critical as truck rams into wedding procession in Odisha's Keonjhar

A joyous occasion turned into grief when a truck rammed into a wedding procession in Keonjhar district killing at least five people and injuring nine others.

The mishap occurred in the wee hours of Wednesday at Sathighar Sahi near National Highway 20 passing through Keonjhar. The injured have been admitted to Keonjhar district headquarters hospital.

As per sources, the daughter of Kartik Patra, a native of Sathighar Sahi, was to get married to Hemanta Patra, son of Hadibandhu Patra of Manpur village under Harichandanpur block. The groom and the baraatis were taking out a procession playing the DJ music when a truck hit the procession between 1 am and 1.30 am just a few metres away from the bride's house. 

While five people died on the spot, nine others were seriously injured. Fire services personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the district headquarters hospital. 

Tension erupted on the spot following the mishap.

The groom's nephew and another person from their side were killed while two other deceased were from Sathighar Sahi.
