A shocking incident of a child being sold in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has come to light. Badagada police rescued the 4-year-old girl and arrested her parents and others involved. The couple admitted selling their daughter due to financial issues.

Couple under police detention for child-sale

In a shocking incident, a four-year-old girl child was allegedly sold for money by her parents in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.

Allegations against a couple from the Badagada area of Bhubaneswar selling their 4-year-old daughter in exchange for a sum of Rs 40,000 has come to the fore.

As per reports, the couple was facing financial constraints and hence, sold their child to another couple in Pipili. Sources informed that the duo was working as daily laborers under the Badagada police limits.

After the incident came to light, Badagada police rescued the child and initiated an investigation.

The parents of the child have admitted to the crime while also acknowledging the role of two intermediaries from the Badagada locality in facilitating the exchange.

Sources said that the transaction took place yesterday (Tuesday) evening and was overseen by the two women intermediaries.

Speaking to OTV, IIC of Badagada police station mentioned that they acted on a tip-off from an apartment owner in Bhubaneswar in whose residence the couple was employed.

Recent Cases of Child Sale in Odisha

The State government, last week, traced a newborn allegedly sold by her parents due to abject poverty in Bolangir district.

Besides, earlier this month, a newborn was also sold by her parents for Rs 20,000 in Rayagada district. The infant was later rescued from the neighboring Andhra Pradesh and was placed in the Special Adoption Agency (SAA) in Rayagada after being presented before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

In another case, reported on November 20, extreme poverty allegedly forced a couple to sell their 17-day-old newborn boy to a childless couple. The incident was reported from Khairapali under the Sohela block of Bargarh district.

The accused couple, who already has five children, was recently blessed with a baby boy but with no means to take care of the newborn, the couple allegedly sold the infant. However, they denied selling the baby.
