A woman and her sick one-and-a-half-year-old nephew suffered critical injuries after an ambulance allegedly hit them inside the new district headquarters hospital at Gelpur in Bhadrak on Sunday.

According to sources, Akshaya Palai, a resident of Asurali in Bhadrak district, had admitted his sick one-and-a-half-year-old son at the Bhadrak DHH three days ago. Since Palai’s wife is a patient, the child’s maternal grandfather Kalandi Parida, a resident of the Kothar area and his aunt (mother’s sister) Chhabirani were attending him.

It was about 4pm on Sunday, when Chhabirani carrying her nephew was going somewhere inside the hospital campus, an ambulance allegedly came rushing towards them and hit them, leaving them seriously injured.

Hearing their cries, some people came to their rescue. While they immediately rushed them into the hospital, some others took the driver out of the ambulance and gave him a good thrashing. Later, the security guards on duty at the hospital premises rescued the driver and handed him over to the police.

As the conditions of Chhabirani and her nephew deteriorated, they were later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack.
