An 18-year-old boy, who succumbed to a brain tumour, has given a new lease of life to two persons by donating his organs. 

As per reports, Om Shibu, son of Ramesh Das of Pattamundai area in Kendrapara district, was undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital (SVBMCH) in Cuttack. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor on January 15. 

According to family members, Shibu was pronounced dead on Thursday. Thereafter, the bereaved family members made a decision to donate Shibu’s kidneys. As they expressed their wish to the medical authorities, the process was started to preserve the kidneys.

Sources said, of the two retrieved kidneys, one will be transplanted to a patient at SCBMCH and the second one will go to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. 

The family members who were yet to come to terms with the loss said it gives them immense satisfaction that their son would continue to live in another two persons. 

“My son was good at studying. He wished to be an IITian. I have donated my son’s organs so that two people can stay alive,” said Ramesh Das. 

Informing about the medical procedures, Urology department head Dr Samir Swain said, “We are waiting for cross-match report. We expect we will complete the rest of the process successfully. The parents set an example for others. In the future, some others might get encouraged by this and come forward for organ donation.”
