An 11-year-old boy died after falling in an open drain while returning from tuition at Laxminrusingh Sahi under Bada Baazar police limits in Berhampur. The deceased has been identified as Sairam Patra.

The shocking incident occurred while Sairam was returning home from his tuition on his bi-cycle. The open drain was overflowing due to incessant rain and Sairam fell into it, his parents alleged. While locals managed to recover his bi-cycle, Sairam went missing.

After hours of search, his body was recovered from the drain at around 2:00am in the wee hours of Thursday. The incident has spread a pall of gloom in the area.

“Two drains are connected to a culvert. He was reportedly playing there when his bi-cycle fell into the drain. He was trying to take out his cycle from the drain when he slipped and fell into it,” informed BMC Commissioner Bhabani Shankar Mishra.

Similarly, Berhampur Mayor Sanghamitra Dalai said, “The drain has been covered on one side, but there is a little work to be done on the other side. The drain flow was also heavy due to the rain and he might have fallen into the drain.”
