Over 11,000 women in Odisha identified as destitute or abandoned by husbands so far in 2025

The number of destitute and husband-abandoned women in Odisha is on the rise. Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Saturday revealed in Odisha Assembly that a total of 11,598 such women have been identified across the state this year. 

The alarming statistics have raised concerns about the social and economic challenges faced by these women and the need for intervention.

Bolangir Reports Highest Cases of Abandoned Women

Among the districts, Bolangir has reported the highest number of destitute and abandoned women, with 3,729 cases being recorded. This significant figure underscores the severity of the issue in the region, prompting the Odisha government to take immediate steps for their rehabilitation and empowerment.

Government’s Initiative: Skill Training for Economic Empowerment

In response to such rising numbers, the Odisha government has initiated livelihood and skill development training programs for affected women. The Deputy Chief Minister assured that efforts are being made to equip these women with vocational skills, enabling them to become financially independent and reintegrate into society with dignity.

The Growing Social Concern and Future Actions

The increase in the number of destitute and abandoned women reflects a larger societal issue, necessitating policy-level reforms and stronger support systems. As the state government continues its efforts, stakeholders are emphasizing the need for long-term solutions, including employment opportunities, shelter provisions, and counselling services.
